The Meiji Restoration began with this family.
Yoshida Shoin was one of the patriots who played a key role in the Meiji Restoration. The Sugi family was the one that raised Shoin.
The Sugi family, Shōin's family home, was a large family where his parents, three sons and three daughters, uncles and aunts, and grandmother all lived together. It is said that at times, as many as 11 people lived together in a small house.
And at the Matsushita Village School, located right next to the Sugi family residence, many young people such as Kusaka Genzui, Takasugi Shinsaku, Ito Hirobumi, and Yoshida Toshimaro studied under Shoin, engaging in debates day and night.
As the turmoil of the late Edo period intensified, Shōin's family and disciples faced a variety of difficulties.
However, with Shōin's teachings in his heart, he did not give up in the face of adversity, and with determination, he always looked forward and lived his life with strength.
Words that Shoin spoke to his disciples, such as "Learning is about learning what it means to be human," "Setting a goal is the source of all things," and "There is nothing that cannot be moved by utmost sincerity," still resonate deeply within us today.
Centered around Fumi, the fourth daughter of the Sugi family, the story dynamically depicts the strong bonds of the Sugi family as they overcome difficulties together, and the youthful lives of the young people who carry on the ideals of Shoin.
